    For most people, brushing their teeth is one of the least personalized parts of the day. The same brush head moves through the same two-minute routine, whether it is reaching the right places or repeatedly missing the spaces where plaque is beginning to form.

    Dyson wants to change that.

    Unveiled in Paris, the new Dyson CameraJet™ is a $499 connected toothbrush that combines a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics and real-time personalized feedback. Rather than relying on the user to recognize where additional cleaning is needed, the device is engineered to see the spaces between teeth and respond instantly with a targeted burst of mouthrinse.

    It is an unusually ambitious entrance into oral care, but it follows a much larger shift happening across consumer technology. The next generation of premium products will not simply perform a function. They will observe, interpret and continuously adapt to the person using them.

    A Toothbrush That Can See What You Miss

    Many people know they should brush for two minutes and floss twice a day. Far fewer consistently do it. According to figures cited by Dyson, nine in 10 people do not floss as regularly as recommended, while the average person spends approximately 45 seconds brushing.

    The issue is not only how long people brush. It is also where they brush.

    Plaque frequently begins forming inside the narrow gaps between teeth, where conventional bristles may not provide sufficient coverage. These interdental spaces are also easy to miss because people cannot clearly see what is happening inside their mouths.

    CameraJet approaches the problem through what Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting™. A 100,000-pixel macro camera captures and analyzes 28 live images every second, allowing the device to identify gaps between the teeth in real time.

    Once a gap is detected, the system can respond within approximately 100 milliseconds by releasing a precision burst of mouthrinse. The result is a brushing experience that combines brushing, liquid flossing and mouth-rinsing within a single routine.

    Behind that seemingly simple interaction is a substantial technology stack. Dyson says CameraJet operates using 16 million lines of code, while its machine-learning system was trained using 470,000 dental images collected during development.

    The intelligence is not being used to generate information for the sake of it. It is being used to recognize a specific need, make a decision and initiate an action while the user is still brushing.

    That distinction is important. CameraJet is not simply a connected toothbrush. It is a small example of agentic technology entering an everyday consumer product.

    From Connected Devices to Responsive Products

    Connected toothbrushes are not entirely new. Existing products can track brushing time, measure pressure and provide coverage reports after a session. CameraJet takes the concept further by connecting observation directly to intervention.

    The camera identifies a gap. The machine-learning system interprets what it sees. The device responds by delivering mouthrinse to that location.

    It is a closed-loop experience in which sensing, intelligence and physical action happen almost simultaneously.

    This is where consumer technology is headed. Instead of requiring users to interpret dashboards and decide what to do next, products are beginning to act on information at the moment it becomes useful.

    For oral care, that could mean targeting an area repeatedly missed during brushing. In beauty, it could mean adjusting a skincare routine based on sensitivity or environmental conditions. In hospitality, it could mean anticipating a guest''s preferences before arrival. Across categories, the underlying progression is the same: from generic functionality to responsive personalization.

    Seeing the spaces between teeth was only one part of the engineering challenge. Dyson also needed to develop a fluid system capable of removing plaque without applying unnecessary pressure to the gums and enamel.

    Many conventional water flossers use a narrow, needle-like stream. According to Dyson''s internal testing, this concentrated stream can puncture plaque without fully removing the surrounding buildup.

    CameraJet instead uses a wider, conical spray. The shape is designed to sweep across plaque and provide broader coverage at a lower pressure.

    Developing the system required Dyson to create its own proxy plaque through a five-year collaboration with the National University of Singapore''s Faculty of Dentistry. The material allowed engineers to repeatedly test different jet shapes and pressure profiles without requiring a new clinical trial for every design adjustment.

    The finished system includes a compact 12.5-milliliter mouthrinse tank, calibrated to dispense enough liquid for one cleaning session without overwhelming the user.

    Inside the handle, an anti-gravity tank uses a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber to maintain consistent performance when the toothbrush is tilted or held horizontally. That matters when cleaning the backs of the teeth, where a traditional straw-based fluid system could pull in air and fail to release the rinse correctly.

    A refill and charging dock completes the routine. At the touch of a button, the station can refill the toothbrush in approximately three seconds while keeping the device charged, upright and ready for its next use.

    Personalization That Improves With the User

    The CameraJet connects to the MyDyson™ app through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its integrated camera can function as a live endoscope, giving users a closer view of their teeth similar to what they might see during a dental examination.

    Dyson says the camera is active only when the live-viewing or automatic jetting feature is being used. Images are not recorded or stored on the toothbrush or in the cloud, keeping the live visual feed private to the user.

    Inside the app, users can access guided cleaning, instructional videos, coverage mapping and individualized feedback. Over time, the system can help a person understand which areas are being cleaned effectively, which areas are consistently missed and how their brushing technique could improve.

    Users can also select automatic or manual jetting and adjust the brushing intensity according to their comfort level.

    This is personalization built around behavior rather than a static profile. The product does not need to know who the user claims to be. It responds to what is happening during the routine itself.

    That kind of event-driven personalization can be especially valuable in health and wellness. Instead of producing another generic recommendation, the device captures a live signal, places it in context and delivers an immediate response.

    A Brush Head With Its Own Identity

    Dyson has also reconsidered the physical brush head.

    Because teeth are curved rather than flat, CameraJet uses a contoured dual-bristle design intended to reach more of the tooth''s surface. Firmer inner bristles are designed to address surface stains, while softer outer bristles clean along the gumline.

    The brush head includes an RFID tag that allows the device to identify when it has been attached and monitor how many cleaning sessions it has completed. When the head reaches the end of its recommended lifespan, the system can notify the user that it is time for a replacement. Attaching a new head resets the cycle.

    A sensitive version will also be available for users who require a gentler brushing experience.

    The toothbrush''s variable sonic oscillation changes the angle of movement while the user brushes. This is designed to keep the bristles moving when they encounter the tooth surface, particularly in harder-to-reach areas where some sonic brushes may stall.

    Dyson reports that external testing found CameraJet removed up to 69 percent more plaque in hard-to-reach areas than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes. As with any manufacturer performance claim, real-world results may vary depending on individual technique and use.

    Building an Entire System Around the Camera

    CameraJet is designed as more than an isolated device. Dyson is also developing a proprietary non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouthrinse to work with the system.

    The toothpaste is formulated without sodium lauryl sulfate, commonly known as SLS, a foaming agent used in many conventional toothpastes. Excess foam could obscure the camera''s view and interfere with Gap Optical Targeting, so Dyson''s formula is intended to keep the image clear while the device analyzes the mouth.

    It is another example of how introducing intelligence into a product can reshape the surrounding ecosystem. Once a camera becomes central to the experience, everything from the toothpaste formula to the mouthrinse consistency must be reconsidered.

    The innovation is therefore not limited to placing a camera inside a toothbrush. Dyson has designed the brush, fluid delivery system, software, accessories and oral-care formulas around the device''s ability to see and respond.

    The Future of Personal Care Is Contextual

    CameraJet represents six years of research and development, but its broader significance extends beyond dentistry.

    Premium consumer products have historically competed through materials, performance and design. Increasingly, they will compete through how effectively they understand the person using them.

    The most compelling personalization does not feel like completing a quiz or selecting preferences from a menu. It happens quietly, through technology that recognizes context and improves the experience without placing more work on the user.

    CameraJet sees a gap and delivers mouthrinse. It recognizes a brush head and tracks its useful life. It monitors coverage and helps the user improve their technique. Each feature turns a small behavioral signal into a personalized action.
