Where to cool off in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend

That is the whole assignment for the next three days. The laptops are closed, the inbox can hold, and the only real decision is water, ice, or both. Below is where to be, what it costs, and what to book before Friday ends.

Atlanta’s better hotels sell access to their pools and spas without a room, and Labor Day weekend is the last stretch of the year when it makes sense.

If you have not used it, ResortPass is the booking platform that makes this possible. Hotels list their unsold daytime capacity on it the way airlines release seats, and you buy a single day of access: the pool, the deck, the towels, usually the fitness center, and at some properties the spa and sauna. You pick a date, pay per person, and arrive as a guest for the day without ever booking a room. Most properties run access from around 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cabanas are a separate and pricier tier, and they come with dedicated service, shade, and somewhere to leave your things, which on a 96-degree Saturday is worth more than it sounds. Several Atlanta hotels also throw in a dining credit, which quietly closes most of the gap between the pass price and what you would have spent on lunch anyway.

Two practical things. Inventory is capped, because a hotel can only put so many strangers on its pool deck before its actual guests complain, and hot Saturdays sell out first. And most bookings can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 24 hours before check-in for a full refund, so there is very little reason to wait and see what the sky does. Book tonight.

Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead Day pass from $150 with access to the spa, indoor pool, sauna and steam room. The indoor pool is the point: this is the pick for anyone who wants the day without the sun. Book the pass

InterContinental Buckhead Outdoor pool, day pass from $55, cabanas from $150 with valet included. Quiet, shaded, and close to everything else on this list. Book the pass

The rooftop that does not require a pass

Bless Your Heart, Hotel Phoenix, Centennial Yards

Hotel Phoenix opened its rooftop bar and restaurant alongside a resort-style pool overlooking the lawn, and it welcomes locals as well as hotel guests. Southern charm played straight, with skyline views and light bites.

Two constraints worth knowing. It runs seasonally and operates Thursday through Sunday, so Labor Day Monday is out. And it sits a few minutes from Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the convention center, which matters this weekend for reasons covered below.

Frozen, but make it a cocktail

Yebo Beach Haus, Buckhead The frozen espresso martini in this city. Served intensely cold without going slushy, landing somewhere between a cocktail and a coffee-forward dessert, and strong enough that regulars treat it as a pre-dinner order rather than a nightcap. If you want the more adventurous pour, the Turkish Frost is built with rum, brandy, Mr. Black coffee liqueur, Meletti amaro and baharat, with almond milk standing in for cream, at $14. Yeppa & Co., Buckhead Village and the Beltline The aperitivo answer, and the reason your group text has seen an espresso martini tower. Roughly $99 for twelve. The zero-proof spritz list is genuinely good rather than an afterthought, which makes this the easiest table for a mixed group.

The James Room, Sweet Auburn The Espresso En Noir uses a house espresso blend with Ketel One and Amaro Averna. The amaro keeps it bitter and herbal instead of sweet. A grown-up room and a grown-up drink. 661 Auburn Ave. NE, Ste. 280 · Closed Mondays

Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall, Beltline The frozen Yoo-hoo espresso martini, which is exactly as unserious as it sounds and exactly as good. Take it to the patio.

The scoop route

Voga Italian Gelato, Inman Park. The best gelato in the city, served in a room of dark wood, dim lighting and plush leather. Fior di latte, peach, bacio, salted caramel.

Morelli’s, Virginia-Highland and Moreland. Grapenuts, blueberry corn cake, coconut-jalapeño. The place to go when the week has been too vanilla.

Honeysuckle Gelato, Ponce City Market and Lee + White.

Butter & Cream, Decatur Square. The correct end to dinner on the square.

Paolo’s Gelato Italiano, Virginia-Highland. Sixty-plus handmade flavors on seasonal rotation, and an owner who will talk you through every one. Open Thursday through Sunday only, so this weekend works and midweek does not.

Two things already on the calendar

Saturday, September 5 · Labor Day Weekend Pool Party at Kimpton Sylvan 2 to 6 p.m., poolside at the Buckhead boutique hotel. Entry covers pool access, a featured tasting and a live DJ, with Carreta de Oro Tequila as the spirit partner. Tickets run about $40 before fees. This is the fifth and final party in the hotel’s Summer Pool Party Series, after Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth and mid-August, so it is the last one until next summer. 374 E. Paces Ferry Rd. Sunday, September 6 · Labor Day Pig Out at Avalon 5 to 8 p.m. at Palmer Plaza, and this is the tenth annual. The Oak and Colletta culinary teams serve an all-you-can-eat Southern barbecue feast with live music and games, benefiting The Giving Kitchen. $50 per person, $25 for children 6 to 12, rising to $55 and $30 on the day. Jeni’s Avalon is a short walk, which makes the evening plan itself.

Before you go

Downtown belongs to Dragon Con. The convention runs September 3 through 7 across downtown Atlanta for its 40th anniversary, drawing more than 75,000 people, with the free parade stepping off at 10 a.m. Saturday on Peachtree Street. Details at dragoncon.org. Anything downtown, Hotel Phoenix and Signia included, will be crowded and slow to park. Buckhead, Midtown and the Westside are the calmer plays.

Save Monday for outside. At 80 degrees it is the first genuinely pleasant day of the weekend, with a 30 percent chance of rain to keep it honest. Spend Saturday and Sunday in the water, and let Monday be the patio.
